Local Information
Helmsdale The harbour is still a focus for the life of Helmsdale. Fishing vessels are based here, rare with today’s European fishing quotas. Visitors will still get the sense of a working harbour of a sort. The ‘Time Span Heritage Centre’ another major part of the village is open for half the year and is acclaimed for its excellent account of the history of the area.

You will also find shops in Helmsdale from which you can hire gold panning equipment, and the licenses to pan for gold. The fact that licences are freely available to anyone hiring the equipment may gives an idea of the likelihood of making your fortune. It is said there is still gold at Baile an Or ("place of gold") near Kildonan railway station. Helmsdale is a beautiful place, with beautiful scenery, we spent time in the summer of 2003 there, being made most welcome.
